This figure is similar to the basic step with slight differences in the directions. On the beat 2 of the first measure the man takes a step diagonally forwards across the body, turning 45° clockwise, and the lady simultaneously steps diagonally backwards, also turning clockwise. On the beat 2 of the second measure the man again takes a step diagonally forwards, now turning 45° counterclockwise, and the lady simultaneously again steps diagonally backwards, turning counterclockwise. On the first measure the left shoulders of the dancers approach each other, on the second measure the right shoulders, hence the name.
